As early as the thirteenth century, Middle Eastern cook books contained recipes
for drinks made with lemon syrup. The Mongols enjoyed a lemon drink made
with alcohol while the Persians enjoyed a lemon drink known as sharbia. By
the mid-1600's street vendors in France were selling lemonade. Lemonade
arrived in America during the 1700's, brought by various immigrants but it
wasn't until the temperance movement of the Victorian era that lemonade gained a
wide spread popularity.
Originally a drink made of lemon juice, sugar and water, modern manufacturing
